New 401(k) plans from Form 5500 filings, in your state every month

A monthly list of employers that just filed their first Form 5500 for a 401(k): sponsor, city, industry and plan size. New plans need advisors, TPAs and recordkeepers, and few people are calling them yet.

  • Every new 401(k) plan in your state, each month DOL publishes filings
  • Sponsor, city, industry (NAICS), participants and plan effective date
  • Email summary plus a CSV you can load into your CRM

How it works

From DOL filing to your pipeline

We pull every new filing

Each DOL Form 5500 and 5500-SF release, merged with amendments, filtered to 401(k) plans filing for the first time.

You pick your state

We split new plans by sponsor state and industry so you only see employers you can serve.

You get a monthly list

An email summary and a CSV of new plans: sponsor, location, industry, participants and start date.

Who uses it

Financial advisors

Reach business owners in the first year of a plan, while they are still choosing investments and an advisor.

TPAs and recordkeepers

Spot startup plans that may outgrow a bundled provider or need testing and admin help.

Broker-dealer and wholesaler teams

Give field reps a fresh territory list each month instead of buying stale data.

Why pay instead of downloading the DOL files?

The raw datasets are hundreds of thousands of rows across two schedules, with amendments, short-form filers and plan types mixed together. We do the merging, de-duplication and 401(k) filtering every month and hand you only the new plans in your state.

We're considering a monthly alert: new 401(k) plans in your state this month, $49/mo per state, with sponsor, city, industry, participant count and the filing ID, as an email and a CSV. 401(k) plans file their first Form 5500 after their first plan year ends, so most plans listed here started in 2025. DOL's files are refreshed about monthly, so the list is monthly too. Built for financial advisors, TPAs and recordkeeper sales teams looking for newly formed plans. It isn't available yet: there's no trial running and nothing is charged. Request a trial and we'll email you if it launches.

We'll only use your email to tell you about this alert. No spam. See privacy.

No card needed. We only email you about this product.

What would you pay?

New 401(k) plan counts by state and industry

401(k) plans file their first Form 5500 after their first plan year ends, so most plans counted here started in 2025. These pages count new 401(k) plans (a first Form 5500 or 5500-SF filed with the U.S. Department of Labor) by sponsor state and industry, from DOL's public datasets (files dated 2026-09-25). For plan year 2025 so far: 68,950 new 401(k) plans with 869,000 active participants, out of 612,964 401(k) plans that have filed.

By plan effective date, 67,527 of the 68,950 new plans (98%) started in 2025, 45,706 (66%) of them on or around January 1, 2025; 576 started in 2024 and 847 before 2024. Expect a gap of months between a plan's start and its appearance here.

Questions

Where does the data come from?

From the U.S. Department of Labor's public Form 5500 and 5500-SF datasets (files dated 2026-09-25). A plan counts as new when it files its first Form 5500 as a 401(k).

Why are plans only listed after their first plan year?

A plan files its first Form 5500 after its first plan year ends, so most plans here started in 2025. Expect a gap of months between a plan's start and its first filing.

Is it available today?

Not yet. Join the waitlist for a free trial when it launches. Nothing is charged and no card is collected.

Why do the free pages show counts and not plan names?

The free pages show counts by state and industry. Some sponsors are individuals or small practices, so we don't list plans publicly.
